WWII Austerity Grub

Thinking about it, I remember my father talking to me about the French farmers - the family that protected him from the Nazis when his plane was shot down in WWII. One of the things that they did to get by during the war was farming - not a word of a lie, this - rabbits: they bred them in a wire enclosure on the grounds of a ruined château nearby and swapped them with the drivers who stopped in the local train yard for bread and cigarettes.
